Nigeria's High Commissioner to Canada Aims for Stronger Ties

Emeritus Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole has officially taken on his role as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Canada, following the presentation of his Letters of Credence to Canada’s Governor General, Louise Arbour, in Ottawa on September 15. His mandate includes strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new opportunities for economic, security, and people-to-people cooperation.

The Nigeria-Canada relationship is currently experiencing renewed engagement, with bilateral merchandise trade reaching C$2.9 billion in 2024, positioning Nigeria as Canada’s second-largest trading partner in Africa. Canadian investments in Nigeria include C$32 million in direct investment and C$590 million in portfolio investment.

Key sectors for enhanced cooperation have been identified, including energy, education, and agriculture. A significant development is the expanded Nigeria-Canada Air Transport Agreement signed in August, allowing for increased passenger and cargo flights, which aims to boost trade and tourism.

Ongoing discussions also address migration issues, including visa processing delays affecting Nigerians.
