NiMet Warns of High Meningitis Risk in Northern States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a public health alert warning residents of severe northern states, particularly Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi, about the heightened risk of cerebrospinal meningitis. This serious infection, caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, spreads through respiratory droplets, especially in crowded and poorly ventilated areas.

NiMet emphasized that the disease can progress rapidly and become life-threatening within hours if untreated. Early diagnosis and prompt antibiotic treatment significantly improve survival rates and reduce complications.

The agency categorized Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi as the highest risk states, while also advising vigilance in Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno. Residents in Plateau, Oyo, Cross River, Edo, Ekiti, and Enugu were advised to exercise moderate vigilance.

NiMet highlighted vulnerable groups, including children, young adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems, and encouraged public vaccination, good hygiene practices, and early medical care to mitigate the risk of infection.
