NIWA Warns Against Unregulated Sand Dredging in Kano

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has issued a warning regarding the dangers of unregulated sand dredging in Tamburawa, Kano State, emphasizing that such activities can weaken river banks and heighten the risk of flooding and erosion. Farooq Imam, the Area Manager of NIWA, delivered this warning during a sensitization exercise aimed at sand dredgers and local residents.

He expressed concern over the non-compliance of some operators with established safety and environmental regulations, which could jeopardize lives and harm the environment. To promote safety, NIWA distributed life jackets to residents and workers in riverine areas, urging them to utilize the equipment properly.

Mustafa Ahmad, chairman of the Sand Dredgers Association of Kano State, called for increased government support and collaboration with dredging operators to address industry challenges and ensure adherence to safety standards. NIWA reiterated the importance of responsible dredging practices to protect lives, the environment, and mitigate flooding and erosion impacts.
