NNPC Warns of Critical Skills Gap in Nigeria's Energy Sector

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has raised concerns regarding Nigeria's expanding energy workforce and technical skills gap, cautioning that without immediate action, the country may lose control over its energy future. Kazachiyang Nuhu, Chief Human Resources Officer of NNPC Limited, spoke at the Oil and Gas Trainers Association of Nigeria (OGTAN) Human Capital Development Conference and Expo in Warri, Delta State, on Thursday.

He noted that the convergence of the Petroleum Industry Act, the Decade of Gas, and rising local operator participation, alongside global energy transitions, is creating a demand for technical talent that Nigeria is struggling to meet. Nuhu highlighted challenges such as an ageing workforce, brain drain, and a disconnect between academia and industry needs.

He called for a fundamental shift in human capital development, advocating for training linked to production and safety, and supported by advanced technologies. Nuhu emphasized that every investment in training should lead to safer operations and a more skilled workforce.
