UK Travel Advisory Sparks Debate on Nigeria's Security

The United Kingdom’s travel advisory on Nigeria, published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on August 20, 2026, has ignited a regional debate regarding its implications for security and foreign relations. Opposition parties in Kwara support the advisory, citing worsening insecurity under the state government, while officials and residents in Kano, Gombe, Jigawa, Yobe, and Kaduna contest this view, asserting their states are relatively peaceful.

Concerns have been raised in Benue about the advisory's impact on foreign humanitarian support for internally displaced persons. The Coalition of Northern Groups cautioned against interpreting the advisory as a blanket statement on the North's safety, urging governments to address genuine security threats.

The advisory warns British nationals against all travel to certain Nigerian states due to terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime, potentially affecting foreign investment, tourism, and humanitarian operations. Nasarawa is noted as the only state in the North-Central zone excluded from the advisory, attributed to its peacekeeping efforts.
