Northern Female Journalists Address Election Harassment

Ahead of the 2027 elections, female journalists in Northern Nigeria have raised alarms about the rising cases of gender-based harassment, intimidation, and violence they encounter while covering electoral events. During a roundtable discussion organized by the Mata Media Foundation in Kano, editor Hafsat Bello emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces for women journalists to share their experiences and prepare for election coverage.

Fauxiya Kabir Tukur from the foundation reiterated their commitment to supporting female journalists through training and capacity building. Samira Zakirai highlighted that female journalists often face gender-based discrimination and harassment, which adversely affects their mental well-being and work.

Zainab Mai Agogo shared her experience of inappropriate behavior from political actors, while Hajiya Maimuna noted that many female journalists avoid election coverage due to fears of violence and insecurity. The discussion called for regular safety training and improved digital security awareness for journalists.
