Nigerian Railway Corporation Plans Electric Shift to Double Rail Capacity by 2034

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) under Kayode Opeifa's leadership plans to transition to electric traction and double rail capacity by 2034, targeting a 60,000 km national network. The NRC aims to optimize rail assets within two years, electrify transit within five years, and achieve the capacity doubling within ten years.

The federal government will unveil a comprehensive rail development roadmap to connect all states and the FCT. States like Lagos and Plateau are already utilizing existing rail corridors, with plans to expand to other states like Ogun, Oyo, Edo, Delta, Kogi, Kaduna, Kano, and Niger.
