NSIB Investigates Collision of MV Maersk Valparaiso

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the serious maritime accident involving the container vessel MV Maersk Valparaiso and the oil tanker MT Ladi Martina, which occurred at Bonny, River State, on May 22, 2026. Following the receipt of a notification, NSIB activated its maritime occurrence response protocol and deployed an investigative team to the site.

The team is tasked with preserving initial evidence and conducting preliminary investigative activities. Funk Adebayo Arowojobo, the Director of Public Affairs at NSIB, stated that the investigation team will board the vessel to collect critical evidence, including detailed interviews with the master and crew members, operational records, navigational data, and relevant casualty security documents.

The technical investigation will also involve analyzing voyage data records (VDR) and electronic chart display information systems (ECDIS). The MV Maersk Valparaiso successfully downloaded comprehensive forensic navigational analysis data.

The investigation will adhere to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Casualty Investigation Code MSC 255 (84).
