NIMASA Responds to Bonny Vessel Collision and Oil Spill

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) activated an emergency response room following a collision between the Singapore-flagged vessel MV Maersk Valparaiso and the Nigerian oil product tanker MT Ladi Martina. The incident occurred at 11:30 AM, resulting in a Tier 1 oil spill at latitude 4.512375 and longitude 7.189429.

Dayo Mobereola, the Director General of NIMASA, instructed the Marine Environment Management Department to commence an environmental impact assessment and take necessary steps to mitigate the impact. NIMASA's Deep Blue Forward Operations Base in Bonny responded within minutes to the distress call, deploying a team of 10 armed personnel aboard interceptor boat DB 214 to the scene.

The MT Ladi Martina was reported to be drifting aground along the Bonny channel, while the MV Maersk Valparaiso remained anchored pending further assessment. NIMASA assured the public that updates would be provided regarding the investigation and response efforts.
