Nigeria Taekwondo Federation Prepares for African Championships

Tayo Popoola, President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, expressed confidence in the country's team for the 2026 African Taekwondo Championships set to take place in Bamako, Mali. This event will mark Nigeria's first participation with a contingent that includes para-athletes alongside competitors in poomsae and kyorugi categories.

Popoola made this declaration during the national taekwondo federation's open trials held at the Alak Sport Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta, where 300 athletes competed over three days. The trials concluded with impressive performances, and Popoola noted that the federation has received necessary support from the government for the trip to Mali.

She emphasized that this is the first time Nigeria will present a large contingent, showcasing the progress of Nigerian taekwondo. Additionally, Popoola is the first female black belt at the Kukkiwon Dan grade in Nigeria, highlighting the importance of Kukkiwon certification for athletes to compete internationally.
