NUJ Bauchi Condemns DSS Assault on Journalist

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, condemned the assault and intimidation of journalists during an official engagement at the Yankari Game Reserve on the previous day. The incident occurred during the unveiling of a 500KVA solar power station and involved a Department of State Services (DSS) officer who reportedly slapped Bashir Adamu of Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC) three times while he was performing his journalistic duties.

The NUJ, represented by state chairman Umar Sa’idu and secretary Isah Garba Gadau, expressed concern over the officer's actions, especially since the journalists did not retaliate but reported the incident to their leadership. The NUJ demanded an immediate investigation into the incident, identification of the DSS officer, and appropriate disciplinary action if found culpable.

The Council emphasized the need for security agencies to respect the rights of journalists and ensure their safety during official events, calling for professionalism and adherence to the freedom of the press.
