NUJ Criticizes Media Restrictions in El-Rufai's Trial

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed serious concerns regarding the media's restricted access to the trial of El-Rufai, stating that journalists have been reduced to mere onlookers. Alabelew, a representative of the NUJ, described the situation as unfortunate, emphasizing that limiting media access undermines the press's critical role in reporting on issues of national interest, particularly in cases involving allegations of corruption and security concerns.

The NUJ chairman noted that this situation is not isolated to Kaduna, recalling previous instances where journalists were denied entry to court premises or faced restrictions based on crowd control measures. Alabelew further explained that such limitations force journalists to rely on second-hand information, which can lead to misleading reports.

He highlighted the risks posed by restricted access, noting that journalists sometimes face threats from hostile individuals when left outside court premises, exposing them to potential dangers.
