NUPRC Launches Emission Tracker to Cut Methane by 2035

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has initiated the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Emission Tracker, a digital platform aimed at reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector by 60% by 2035. The platform was handed over to the Commission Chief Executive, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, at the NUPRC headquarters in Abuja.
This initiative is part of the commission's 2022 Guidelines for the Management of Fugitive Methane and Greenhouse Gas Emissions, which require operators to transition from estimation-based to measurement-based emissions reporting by the first quarter of 2027. The tracker combines satellite-based methane detection with facility-level emissions measurements, allowing regulators to identify pollution hotspots and improve compliance monitoring.
The platform was developed in partnership with the Stakeholder Democracy Network, with support from the Global Methane Hub. It is designed for use by both the NUPRC and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, facilitating coordinated methane monitoring across the oil and gas value chain.
