NURTW Forms Caretaker Committee Amid Osun Suspension

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on Friday rejected the suspension of its activities by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, asserting that he lacks the constitutional authority to do so. In response to the leadership crisis within the state chapter, the NURTW inaugurated a seven-member caretaker committee, chaired by Kazeem Oyewale, also known as Asiri Eniba, at its national headquarters in Garki, Abuja.

This decision follows the state government's suspension of NURTW operations in motor parks due to violent clashes between rival factions. The state Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, announced the suspension to restore order and public security.

The clashes were sparked by a protest from Oyewale's faction against the leadership of state NURTW Chairman Nurudeen Alowonle. NURTW's National President, Musiliu Akinsanya, represented by Deputy National President Aliyu Ore, emphasized that no state government has the power to suspend the union's activities, citing previous court victories against similar actions.

The caretaker committee's establishment is crucial ahead of the upcoming governorship election, as the union has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Independent National Electoral Commission for transporting election materials.
