NURTW Rejects Osun Governor's Suspension of Activities

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on Friday rejected the suspension of its activities by the Osun State Government, asserting that Governor Ademola Adeleke does not have the constitutional authority to halt its operations. In response, the NURTW inaugurated a seven-member caretaker committee, chaired by Kazeem Oyewale, at its national headquarters in Garki, Abuja.

This decision follows a violent confrontation in Osogbo, where Oyewale's supporters protested against the state NURTW Chairman, Nurudeen Alowonle, leading to clashes that caused panic among residents. NURTW's National President, Musiliu Akinsanya, represented by Deputy National President Aliyu Ore, emphasized that the union operates independently of state control and has previously won court cases against similar suspensions.

The caretaker committee's establishment aims to ensure functional leadership within the union, especially ahead of the upcoming governorship election, as the NURTW has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Independent National Electoral Commission for transporting election materials.
