Taraba Teachers Reject N5,000 Salary Deduction as Illegal

Primary school teachers across the 16 local government councils of Taraba State, represented by the Concerned Affected Teachers of Taraba State, have condemned a N5,000 deduction from their salaries by the Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB). The deduction, purportedly for permanent identity cards, was described as illegal and unjust by the teachers, who argue that administrative costs should be borne by the employer.

They criticized TSUBEB's claim that the deduction had the support of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), stating that union officials lack the authority to authorize such deductions without workers' consent. The teachers highlighted that this deduction follows a previous N3,000 deduction for APER forms, compounding their financial burden amid economic hardship.

They demanded transparency regarding the procurement process for the identity cards and called on Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas to investigate the matter and ensure a refund of the deducted amounts.
