NUT to Protest in Delta Over Union Division Claims

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced a peaceful protest scheduled for Thursday, July 30, 2026, in Delta State, citing attempts to divide the union and undermine a 2018 agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASSUS). The protest follows a meeting convened on July 20 by the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, which excluded the NUT from discussions regarding the reversal of a ₦500 check-off levy deduction.

In a letter dated July 24, signed by Delta State Secretary Dan Basime, the NUT expressed concerns that such exclusions could threaten industrial peace in the education sector. The union emphasized that it is a major stakeholder in the agreement and that discussions on the matter should not occur without its involvement.

The NUT reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and collective bargaining while supporting Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's administration. As of the report's filing, the Delta State Government and ASSUS had not responded to the planned protest or the union's concerns.
