Shehu Sani Advocates Military Training in NYSC Reform

Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna Central Senator, expressed his opposition to appointing a civilian as the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He argued that while reforms in the NYSC are beneficial, the military training component should not be eliminated.

Sani stated that Nigeria faces serious security challenges, necessitating rigorous military training for corps members. His comments followed President Bola Tinubu's approval for a significant overhaul of the NYSC aimed at updating its programs to enhance the lives of participants.

The reforms include a new six-week training program focusing on leadership and entrepreneurship, utilizing digital tools for specific career paths. The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, are involved in the changes to the NYSC Act to ensure the safety of corps members through careful management of risks and the use of technology.
