OB3 Gas Pipeline Ready for First Gas, NNPC Reports

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has confirmed that the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline is ready for first gas, marking a significant advancement in Nigeria's gas transmission infrastructure. According to NNPC's July 2026 monthly report, pre-commissioning activities at the OB3 River Niger Crossing have been completed, with the OB3 project reported at 100% completion.

The Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline is at 95% completion. The 130-kilometre OB3 pipeline is designed to transport up to 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day, linking Nigeria’s eastern and western regions.

This completion is expected to enhance the national gas network and improve supply to power plants, industries, and domestic users. The River Niger crossing, completed in April, involved drilling approximately two kilometres beneath the river using horizontal directional drilling technology.

NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer Bayo Ojulari stated that OB3 is central to the Federal Government’s goal of developing a resilient national gas network and is linked to Nigeria's broader energy targets, including increasing crude oil production to 3 million barrels per day and gas output to 12 billion standard cubic feet per day by 2030.
