Ogun State Sees 161 Deaths from 415 Road Crashes in 2026

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun State Command reported that there were 161 fatalities resulting from 415 road crashes in Ogun State from January to May 2026. Mr.

Afolabi Odunsi, the command's spokesperson, disclosed this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday. In comparison, there were 494 road traffic crashes recorded during the same period in 2025, indicating a decrease of 79 crashes in 2026.

The number of injuries also saw a decline, with 1,007 individuals sustaining various degrees of injuries in 2026, down from 1,121 in 2025. Odunsi attributed these improvements to intensified public enlightenment campaigns by FRSC personnel, which educated the public on road safety measures.

However, he noted that road crashes were often caused by violations of traffic rules, including speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, mobile phone use while driving, overload, and tire bursts. He appealed to motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent unnecessary loss of lives.
