Ogun Youths Burn Police Stations After Killing Incident

On Wednesday, in Ifonyintedo, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, some youths set fire to two police stations after the alleged killing of Owolabi Oniyiku at a police checkpoint. Oniyiku, a Lagos-based resident, had returned to celebrate the Oro festival when he was reportedly shot by policemen at a makeshift checkpoint around Akinde Junction.
A community leader stated that the checkpoint had become notorious for harassing motorists and commercial motorcyclists. Oniyiku was said to have been confronted by the police while returning from Ilashe with friends, leading to the shooting.
He was unarmed and killed on the spot. The incident was particularly tragic as his wife had given birth just two days prior.
Following the shooting, youths carried Oniyiku's corpse to the police station, escalating tensions and resulting in the burning of both a newly completed community police station and an older, dilapidated one. The Ipokia Local Government Youth Forum has called for an immediate investigation into the incident.
