Ogunwumiju Honors Late Justice Kalgo's Legacy

Justice Helen Ogunwumiju, CFR, of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, honored the late Justice Umaru Atu Kalgo, JSC (Rtd), CON, who passed away at the age of 89. Ogunwumiju characterized Kalgo as an erudite, hardworking, and compassionate jurist whose contributions left a significant mark on Nigeria’s Judiciary.

She recalled her experiences as a Senior Legal Aid Counsel in Sokoto State from 1983 to 1986, where she appeared before Kalgo, then Chief Judge of Sokoto State, in various criminal trials. Kalgo was noted for his efficient handling of cases, often sitting until 5 PM and delivering detailed judgments promptly.

Ogunwumiju described him as a scholarly gentleman with a dry British sense of humor and praised his mastery of the English language. She highlighted his patience and encouragement towards her as a young lawyer.

Kalgo's legal career began with his call to the Nigerian Bar in 1965, and he served at various levels of the Judiciary, contributing to the development of Nigerian jurisprudence. Ogunwumiju expressed condolences to the Sokoto State Judiciary, the people of Sokoto, and Kalgo’s family.
