Edo Celebrates First Female Neurosurgeon Dr Eki-Udoko

On Sunday, Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo of Edo State and the management of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Benin, celebrated Dr Ekiomado Eki-Udoko for becoming the first female neurosurgeon in Edo and Delta states, as well as the old Midwest Region. Dr Eki-Udoko was certified by the West African College of Surgeons after completing her specialist training.

During the celebration at the Government House in Benin City, Okpebholo praised her dedication and assured her of government support to enhance her career and improve specialized healthcare in the state. Dr Philip Ugbodaga, Medical Director of the hospital, expressed pride in Eki-Udoko's achievement, emphasizing its significance in the history of specialist medical practice in the region.

Eki-Udoko acknowledged the challenges of her journey and credited her husband for his support. She plans to pursue further training in subspecialties of neurosurgery and noted that she is one of only seven female neurosurgeons in Nigeria, with five currently practicing.
