Ondo Assembly Suspends Plenary, Demands Speaker's Resignation

The Ondo State House of Assembly has suspended all plenary activities due to a deepening leadership crisis, with lawmakers insisting that Speaker Rt. Hon.

Olamide Oladiji must resign or face impeachment. This decision was announced by Olatunji Ifabiyi, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, who stated that members would not return to plenary until there is a change in leadership.

The crisis stems from allegations that Oladiji acted unilaterally regarding the reordering of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) budget, valued at approximately N9.2 billion. Ifabiyi noted that 21 out of 26 lawmakers have endorsed a resolution demanding Oladiji's resignation, surpassing the constitutional threshold for impeachment proceedings.

Despite the pressure, there is no indication that Oladiji intends to resign. Additionally, the Assembly spokesman dismissed reports of a resolution through political intervention, maintaining that the lawmakers' position remains unchanged.

A peace meeting was reportedly held with the executive arm, but details of any agreements were not disclosed.
