16 Kidnapped Worshippers Freed in Ekiti, One Dies

On April 28, 2026, gunmen attacked the Christ Apostolic Church in Eda Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area, Ekiti State, abducting 16 worshippers, including women and children. The victims were held captive for 65 days, during which one woman died.

The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of 1 billion naira, later reduced to 50 million naira, with reports indicating that 10.5 million naira and items were paid. Following protests from the community, the victims were finally rescued through a coordinated operation involving the police, military, and local hunters.

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji directed the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital to provide comprehensive medical care for the victims, who are currently receiving treatment for severe injuries. The governor expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for support in ensuring the victims' safe return and urged individuals to refrain from politicizing the incident.
