Abuja's Green Areas Under Threat Despite Wike's Order

One week after Nyesom Wike, the Governor of Rivers State, ordered the demolition of structures obstructing designated waterways and green areas in Abuja, many buildings continue to be constructed in these areas. This situation has raised concerns among residents and experts regarding the growing distortion of Abuja's master plan, which they link to recent flooding that submerged homes and major roads in districts such as Maitama Extension, Wuse 1 and 2, Durumi, Gaduwa, and Gudu.

Residents fear that uncontrolled construction will worsen flooding, increase environmental pressure, and deprive them of recreational facilities. In Wuse Zone 6, a popular park has been transformed into commercial development, while in Durumi District, two plots designated as green areas are being developed, with one plot previously occupied by Spotlite Garden now allocated to a real estate developer.

Chikezie Ugochukwu, the operator of the garden, stated that the development contradicts the area's intended purpose as a waterway and buffer zone. Residents have also reported that other green areas are being fenced off for development, which could obstruct sewage lines and drainage.
