At Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) located in Sagamu, Ogun State, medical trainees have launched industrial action in response to unpaid revised professional allowances and deteriorating conditions in the workplace. The Association of Resident Doctors initiated the 10-day warning strike after the Ogun State government allowed their 14-day ultimatum to pass without reaching an agreement or offering definite payment assurances.
The physicians' complaints span multiple areas beyond compensation alone. Staffing shortages, training programme funding delays, inadequate hospital security, and insufficient facilities all represent serious welfare problems.
At their second quarterly general meeting on Monday in Adebola Adegunwa Hall at the OOUTH campus, members voted to engage in industrial action. Dr.
John Omotoso, president of the association, voiced concern over the state government's refusal to establish the revised allowance structure and specialist pay owed to residents. A 50,000 naira penalty has been established by the association for members who breach strike rules during the 10-day period, as communicated in a Tuesday statement.
This penalty reflects the doctors' commitment to maintaining unity in their action. The walkout emerges amid ongoing funding challenges and delayed disbursements that frequently affect teaching hospitals throughout Nigeria.
OUTH, a principal medical facility serving Ogun State, will likely experience disruptions in service delivery due to residents' action. The institution has not yet released information regarding backup arrangements or expected effects on patient services throughout the strike duration.
