Nigeria's CNG Transition Faces Major Operational Hurdles

Nigeria's transition to compressed natural gas (CNG) for transportation is facing significant operational bottlenecks, as highlighted by industry leaders during discussions at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry. President Bola Tinubu's initiative aims to provide cheaper and cleaner fuel alternatives following the removal of fuel subsidies.

Ismaeel Ahm, the Executive Chairman of the Presidential CNG Initiative, defended the program, stating it has already reduced transport costs and attracted investment. However, he acknowledged that the adoption of CNG remains far below expectations due to inadequate infrastructure and a weak supply network.

Chinyere Almona, Director General of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasized that the lack of refueling stations outside major cities like Lagos and Abuja significantly hampers the initiative's progress. She noted that without proper infrastructure and regulatory support, the transition to CNG will be challenging.

Currently, there are approximately 75 refueling stations across Nigeria, with plans for further expansion.
