OPWS Troops Kill Kidnapper, Arrest Two in Benue Crackdown

Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke neutralized one suspect and arrested two others during operations along the Jortar-Atume axis on August 19.

Troops from the Joint Task Force under Operation Whirl Stroke have eliminated one suspected kidnapper and taken two others into custody following separate enforcement actions in Benue State. The operations took place on August 19, 2026, after military personnel received actionable intelligence regarding criminal activity in the region.

According to Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the acting spokesperson for OPWS headquarters, soldiers moved into the Jortar-Atume corridor where a suspected bandit leader and associates had established an unlawful checkpoint. Upon reaching the location, the troops engaged the suspects in a confrontation that resulted in one fatality.

Two individuals were apprehended during the operation. One source identified the arrested suspects as Terhile Iyo and Vershima Emmanuel, though not all reports included these names.

The military statement indicated that the suspects were connected to an attempted abduction of a resident. Authorities recovered items and weapons linked to the criminal enterprise, though the complete inventory was not disclosed in available statements.

The operation represents ongoing efforts by OPWS to counter kidnapping networks and bandit gangs operating within Benue State. The task force, which coordinates military responses across multiple local government areas including Logo, has intensified operations based on community intelligence about criminal checkpoints used to target travellers for ransom schemes.
