Senate Commends Tinubu for Oriire Kidnap Rescue Success

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Senate commended President Bola Tinubu for his leadership in the successful rescue operation of abducted schoolchildren and a teacher in Oriire. The motion, moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, received unanimous support.

The Senate praised the Armed Forces and security agencies for their commitment and bravery during the operation, while also mourning servicemen who lost their lives. However, the Senate rejected a call from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for a United Nations investigation into the abduction, labeling it an attempt to trivialize federal efforts to combat insecurity.

Former Edo State Governor Adam Oshiomhole described Makinde's request as unstatesmanlike and undermining Nigeria's sovereignty. The Senate urged the government to enhance security measures, particularly in regions like Borno, Yobe, Kebbi, Kaduna, and Katsina, where school kidnappings remain unresolved.

Additionally, they recommended compensating servicemen involved in the rescue operations.
