Violence in Ikire Leaves Five Dead Amid Political Blame

On Monday morning, a violent clash at the Naira and Kobo motor park in Ikire, the headquarters of Irewole local government area in Osun State, resulted in at least five fatalities and several injuries. The altercation reportedly involved rival groups, with commercial drivers among the casualties.

Local sources suggested a transport union leadership struggle or political motives as potential causes, although the exact reason is still under investigation. Police Public Relations Officer Abiodun Ojelabi stated that the casualty figure could not be confirmed immediately and mentioned that the Commissioner of Police was heading to the scene for an assessment.

The incident sparked political blame, with the APC, represented by Oluwafunsho Fagbohungbe, accusing armed thugs linked to the Accord of orchestrating the violence. The Accord's Chairman, Victor Akande, denied these claims, alleging that the Divisional Police Officer, Bamidele Olatona, opened fire on unarmed civilians.

In response, the Osun state police command deployed additional operatives to restore order.
