Five Killed in Ikire Shooting Amid Political Unrest

On August 24, 2023, the Nigerian Police Force confirmed a shooting incident near the Naira and Kobo Garage in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of five individuals amid a struggle for control of the facility. Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi stated that while reports indicated casualties, the Command had not yet verified these claims.

Allegations circulated on social media suggested that three commercial bus drivers and two passersby were killed during a confrontation at the garage. It was also claimed that the Divisional Police Officer in Ikire, Olatona Bamidele, allowed a group described as thugs to take over the facility.
