Korope Drivers Protest Fuel Costs, Stranding Commuters

On September 23, 2026, commuters in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, experienced significant disruptions as intra-city minibus operators, known as Korope, protested against rising fuel costs and alleged mismanagement of daily ticket revenues by union leadership. The protest, organized by the Association of Korope Drivers, began early in the morning and lasted until around 2 PM, blocking major routes.

Abdulwasiu Osuolale, speaking for the group, criticized union leaders for their lack of support during economic hardships, stating that the high costs of fuel and vehicle maintenance have made transport operations unprofitable. The drivers announced an increase in transport fares, with new rates set for various routes, including N300 for the shortest routes and up to N1,200 for the longest.

Emmanuel Olowu, Executive Director of the Socio-Economic and Civic Rights Advocacy, praised the drivers for their peaceful demonstration and highlighted the need for oversight in the transport ticketing system.
