Oshiomhole Recalls Organizing Ogun Protests Against Obasanjo

During a national discourse at the University of Lagos, Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole recounted his efforts to organize protests in Ogun State against the removal of fuel subsidies during former President Olusegun Obasanjo's administration. Oshiomhole, who was the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress at the time, expressed his belief that the government lacked the capability to distribute the benefits of the subsidy fairly among Nigerians.

He specifically mentioned visiting Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, where he collaborated with local leaders, including Afolabi Salisu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, to oppose the subsidy removal. Oshiomhole stated that he informed the Ogun residents that while Obasanjo could remove the subsidy, he would not be able to return the benefits to the poor due to systemic issues.

The protests garnered support from workers and students, including those from the University of Lagos, although some university officials maintained a neutral stance publicly.
