COPA Demands INEC, Police Action on Osun Election Violence

The Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers and Advocates (COPA) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force to investigate allegations of political incitement, threats, and violence associated with the August 15 Osun State governorship election. COPA Coordinator Ajibola Bello expressed concern over videos circulating that allegedly contain statements encouraging intimidation and violence, which could hinder citizens' participation in the electoral process.

While COPA is not determining criminal responsibility, it calls for an investigation into the authenticity and context of these statements, particularly those urging violence against opposing political party members. The coalition emphasized that no political actor has the authority to prevent eligible Nigerians from voting and urged INEC and the police to examine these allegations under the Electoral Act 2026.

COPA also called for the authentication of the videos and the identification of individuals involved, alongside investigating reports of violence during the election.
