INEC Tackles Voter Apathy Ahead of Osun Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is actively seeking solutions to voter apathy in anticipation of the 2026 Osun State governorship election, which is viewed as a crucial test for the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Professor Kunle Ajayi, emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration during a dialogue themed "Voter Apathy: Prospects for Improved Voter Turnout." The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun, Oluwatoyin Babalola, noted that despite improvements in voter registration and electoral reforms, voter turnout continues to decline due to factors such as public distrust in political leadership, economic hardship, misinformation, and security concerns.

Babalola urged political parties to conduct peaceful, issue-based campaigns and called for greater engagement from civil society organizations and media to mobilize voters. INEC is committed to ensuring credible elections, with the Osun governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026, in compliance with the Electoral Act.
