Osun Elections: Police Neutrality Under Scrutiny

The elections in Osun on Saturday will assess the Nigeria Police Force's capacity to maintain neutrality as a referee amid political tensions. IGP Olatunji Disu visited Osun on July 3 to address escalating political violence, meeting with Governor Ademola Adeleke, political parties, traditional rulers, and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

Disu emphasized that the election should not resemble a war and highlighted the importance of early intelligence gathering to identify potential flashpoints. He also raised concerns about influential individuals allegedly shielding wanted criminals, which sparked discomfort among some.

In response to doubts about the current Commissioner of Police's neutrality, the Force appointed an Electoral Commissioner of Police, indicating a proactive approach to ensure perceived impartiality. Additionally, senior officers have been deployed to oversee operations, reflecting a strategic effort to enhance election security.
