Osun's 2026 Election Faces High-Risk Security Concerns

The governorship election in Osun is scheduled for August 15, 2026, with significant attention on 13 local government areas identified as high-risk due to escalating political violence. The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified 385 election flashpoints across these areas.

Concerns have risen from incidents of politically motivated clashes, attacks, and intimidation involving rival political party supporters. The Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) recorded 73 election-related violent incidents resulting in 29 deaths, with Osogbo, the state capital, being the worst-hit area.

Specific incidents include the killing of a 14-year-old boy in Irepodun and the attack on a PVC collection center in Odo-Otin. INEC plans to deploy specialized security forces to these hotspots, while the Nigeria Police Force will send at least 14,692 officers to ensure a peaceful election.

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has urged security agencies to maintain impartiality and protect voters and electoral officials.
