Over 200 Athletes Set for Traditional Sports Championship

The inaugural Traditional Sports National Open Championship is set to take place from August 14 to 16, 2026, at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, with over 200 athletes expected to participate. The three-day event will showcase five traditional sports: Abula, Ayo, Langa, Dambe, and Kokowa.

Abdullahi Libata, the Technical Director of the Traditional Sports Federation of Nigeria, stated that the championship aims to provide a platform for athletes to demonstrate their skills while promoting Nigeria's rich traditional sporting heritage. He emphasized that the competition will also serve as a means to identify and nurture talents across the country.

Libata mentioned that the federation, under the leadership of its President, Senator Obinna Ogba, is dedicated to developing and repositioning traditional sports in Nigeria, ensuring they receive the recognition and development they deserve both nationally and internationally.
