Fire at Pakistan Hospital Claims Lives of 14 Infants

A tragic fire occurred at approximately 7 a.m. on the third floor of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, specifically in the mother and child health ward. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 14 infants, with some reports indicating a toll of 15.

At the time of the fire, 16 newborns were present in the ward, and only one child was rescued. Parents Javeria and Mudasir, who lost their newborns, reported that all but one of the ward's doors were shut during the incident, complicating rescue efforts.

Prime Minister Sharif has ordered an immediate investigation into the fire, which is among the deadliest hospital fires in Pakistan's recent history. PIMS, a major public hospital in Islamabad, has faced criticism for being under-resourced and overcrowded.

There was no immediate comment from PIMS or government authorities regarding the incident.
