Parties Rush to Submit Candidates' Lists Ahead of Deadline

Political parties in Nigeria are intensifying efforts to upload their candidates' lists to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal ahead of the submission deadline set for July 11, 2023, at 6 PM. This deadline is part of the electoral process governed by Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates that parties submit their candidates' details within 120 days of the elections.

The INEC has already begun issuing access codes to parties for the online submission of their candidates for the presidential and national assembly elections scheduled for August 1. Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), confirmed that they are preparing to meet the deadline.

However, there are concerns among party officials regarding the trustworthiness of state party officials in submitting candidates' details. Professor Joash Amupitan, the INEC chairman, emphasized the importance of adhering to the strict provisions of the electoral process, while the commission monitors submissions across the country.
