PDP and CNPP Criticize Tinubu's Electoral Act Assent

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) have expressed strong disapproval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's assent to the Electoral Act amendment bill, which was signed on Wednesday. The PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, described the assent as a "bad omen" for Nigeria's democracy, emphasizing that it was granted hastily despite significant opposition from the public.

The CNPP, represented by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jame Ezema, also voiced profound disappointment, stating that the president's decision represents a missed historical opportunity to address structural loopholes identified by stakeholders. They raised serious concerns about controversial provisions in the amendment, particularly those allowing presidential office reliance on poll unit results, which could undermine electoral integrity due to technological limitations in remote areas.

The CNPP warned that the amendments weaken safeguards established in recent electoral reforms.
