Supreme Court Urged to Address PDP Convention Dispute

The Supreme Court of Nigeria is urged to reconsider its stance on the justiciability of internal party matters, particularly concerning the People's Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP is embroiled in legal disputes following its November 15-16, 2025, national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The court of appeal upheld a judgment from the Federal High Court, which ruled against the convention's conduct, asserting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not participate. The appeal court, led by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam, stated that the PDP's internal matters do not fall under judicial jurisdiction, emphasizing that the party's actions violated the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act of 2022.

The court criticized the faction led by Turaki for attempting to bypass legal processes, reinforcing that no court would condone such actions. The case highlights the ongoing struggle within the PDP and the implications of judicial involvement in political party affairs.
