NMA Condemns Arrest of Renowned Surgeon in Enugu

The Enugu State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has strongly condemned the arrest of Professor Martin C. Aghaji, an internationally acclaimed cardiothoracic surgeon, which reportedly occurred at his residence in Enugu in the early hours of Friday, July 3, 2026.

In a communiqué issued on Saturday following an emergency meeting, the NMA expressed concern over the lack of official communication from security agencies regarding the reasons for Aghaji's arrest. The communiqué, signed by NMA Enugu State Chairman Dr.

Sunday Okafor and General Secretary Dr. Chima Edoga, called for extensive engagement with relevant government and security authorities to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The NMA emphasized that every citizen deserves to be treated with dignity and due process. They announced plans to convene an emergency general meeting to discuss potential legal actions and urged members to remain calm and united.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command distanced itself from the arrest, stating through spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukw that they did not arrest Aghaji or mention his name in custody.
