Peter Obi Condemns Attacks on Women at Delta Festival

Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, condemned the sexual assaults and harassment of women during the controversial Alu Festival held in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, Delta State. In a statement released on Saturday, Obi described the attacks as a reflection of the nation's misplaced priorities, emphasizing that women constitute 50% of Nigeria's population and should be meaningfully integrated into leadership and management structures.

He criticized the focus on trivial events like the Ozoro Festival instead of investing in women's empowerment, citing examples from Scandinavian countries and Indonesia where women significantly contribute to economic development. Following the incidents, which were captured in a viral video showing young women being chased and molested, the Delta State Police confirmed the arrest of several suspects, including community leaders.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) condemned the attacks and pledged support for justice for the victims.
