Peter Obi Critiques Unverified Credentials in Leadership

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, issued a statement on Tuesday regarding the dangers of accepting unverified academic credentials in leadership roles. He warned that such practices could erode standards and accountability within society, stating, “By making excuses for unverified certificates, we are planting poison in the soul of our society.” Obi stressed that the issue should not be viewed through the lens of political loyalty but rather as a matter of maintaining standards and accountability.

He cautioned that normalizing the disregard for credential verification could lead to dire consequences, such as having unqualified individuals in critical roles, including professors, doctors, and judges. Obi called for a societal commitment to truth and standards, asserting that history would judge society based on the principles defended, not merely on individual loyalties.

His statement follows the release of the names and credentials of presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2027 election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
