Edo State Ranked Lowest in 2026 Performance Index

The 2026 Phillips Consulting State Performance Index (pSPI), released this week, identified Edo State as the least improved among 33 states assessed, while Enugu State was recognized as the most improved relative to the national average. The pSPI is based on 37 performance indicators across seven pillars: security, education, health, basic infrastructure, governance, economic development, and fiscal performance, combining 70 percent objective data with 30 percent citizen perception.

This year’s report introduced a Momentum Index, indicating whether states are progressing or regressing relative to the national average. Edo State's poor ranking reflects significant retrogression over the past 24 months, highlighting the need for states to analyze the report's findings critically.

The report also noted Lagos State's decline, ranking it 19th despite its infrastructure projects, indicating that physical improvements do not necessarily lead to better governance outcomes. The report calls for a thorough examination of the data to foster improvement across states.
