Tensions Rise in South Africa Over Anti-Immigrant Protests

On Wednesday, police in South Africa clashed with protesters in Durban who were demonstrating against undocumented immigrants, including Nigerians. The protests were part of a growing series of anti-foreign sentiment in the country, which has led to violent attacks on immigrants in recent years.

Various groups, including the controversial Dudula Movement, mobilized to demand tougher immigration measures from the government. Herman Mashaba, leader of the ActionSA party, criticized the government's handling of immigration, claiming it exacerbates unemployment and crime.

The protests escalated when a small group broke away to harass bystanders and loot shops, prompting police to use tear gas and rubber bullets to restore order. Among the protesters was 81-year-old Themba Dlamini, who expressed concerns that illegal immigration harms the country and intensifies job competition among unemployed citizens.

Official statistics indicate that approximately three million foreigners represent 5.1% of South Africa's population, which currently faces a high unemployment rate of 32%.
