Plateau Governor Declares Hisbah Activities Illegal

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has issued a directive to security agencies to stop the activities of individuals allegedly operating as Hisbah in parts of Jos North Local Government Area. This announcement was made on Sunday through a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.

The governor's action follows reports that the group has been intimidating residents, extorting money, and imposing rules without legal authority. Mutfwang warned that anyone found involved in these activities could face arrest and prosecution.

He emphasized that law enforcement in Plateau State is the responsibility of constitutionally recognized authorities, stating, “No individual or group has the authority to appoint itself the government of Plateau State.” The governor clarified that this directive is not aimed at any particular faith or ethnic community, ensuring that all residents are entitled to equal protection under the law. He also expressed gratitude to residents who reported the alleged activities, assuring them of his administration's commitment to addressing legitimate security concerns.
