Plateau State Closes Schools Amid Diphtheria Outbreak

The Plateau State Government has mandated the immediate temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state as a precautionary measure against suspected cases of diphtheria. This directive was issued on Saturday by Joyce Ramnap, the Commissioner for Information, and will take effect from Monday, remaining in force “until further notice.” The closure applies to all schools, including those that have already resumed for the new term, and aims to limit exposure among children amid growing concerns over the outbreak, particularly in Jos North, Wase, Jos South, and Bassa Local Government Areas.

Parents, teachers, and school owners are urged to comply fully with the directive to ensure the safety of students and staff. Health authorities in Plateau have confirmed suspected cases, prompting the Ministry of Health to activate surveillance and response teams.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has previously advised states to enhance vaccination and public awareness to prevent wider transmission.
